Welcome to my corner of the internet, where I take fiction seriously, sometimes lovingly, sometimes with a raised eyebrow, and occasionally with the literary equivalent of a flamethrower.

Around here, you’ll find essays shamelessly gushing over stories with believable characters, themes that are actually explored, and writers who trust their audience enough to engage with difficult questions. But loving stories also means examining them honestly, taking apart what doesn’t work, and asking why.

Sometimes that means enthusiastically hyping fiction that deserves more attention; sometimes it means dissecting narrative choices that leave you wondering who the hell thought this was a good idea. And yes, I am more than capable of doing that. In fact, I’ve developed a pretty disturbing habit of finding the weak points in a story and enthusiastically poking at them with a stick.

Fair warning: I overanalyze things and follow tangents longer than any sensible person should. I occasionally sound like I’m cross-examining a fictional character in court. And yes, I’m trying to keep the snobbery under control. No promises.

Also: I’m a writer first and a critic second. These essays are not the end goal; they are part of the same process that goes into writing my own fiction. I’m interested in storytelling, characters, themes, tropes, ethics, consequences, and the strange ways fiction reveals what we value.

These essays explore many of the same questions that appear in my own writing. Next year, I plan to publish Part One of my novel, which explores the themes and storytelling choices discussed here in greater depth. If you enjoy the way I think about fiction, you may find something familiar in my own stories as well.

Subscribe to the newsletter for updates on new essays and a heads-up when my novel is about to be published.

As my fiction takes priority, the essays may become less frequent, or eventually come to an end. That would simply mean they’re doing the job they were meant to do.

One note: this blog is a publication channel, not a discussion forum. I do not offer a comments section, maintain an active social media presence, or engage in ongoing correspondence. To keep my focus on writing, my process is simple: I research, write, occasionally have a meltdown involving too much coffee and yelling at lifeless objects, publish, and move on to the next piece.

So, thanks for reading. And about that non-correspondence shtick: I promise you’re not missing out on some secret backstage experience. The glamorous life of a writer mostly consists of staring at a blinking cursor.

PS: A note for younger readers: this space is intended for adults. My essays may discuss mature subjects, including sexuality, violence, trauma, ethics, and other uncomfortable topics. I write about these things directly, and I occasionally use strong language when the situation calls for it. I also snark and swear when I feel like it, because sometimes “goodness gracious” just isn’t an adequate literary response.

PPS: If I am writing about a story you love, you may want to consider whether you actually want to read that particular essay. Sometimes analysis changes the way you see a work, and once you notice something, you cannot always unnotice it. I have no desire to ruin anyone’s favorite story, but I also will not pretend I didn’t see what I saw.

Hi, I’m Minako Němcová.
